Anti-bullying Safe Spaces Initiative Training for School-Based Staff

We invite you and your school staff to participate in a vital professional development opportunity co-sponsored by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), DC Public Schools (DCPS) and the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). The goal of the 1.5 day PD sessions are to provide participants with the knowledge, skills and resources to create safe and affirming school environments for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. The PD sessions will be led by certified facilitators from OSSE, DCPS and local communities based organizations, and are being provided at no cost to individual schools.

The goal of the 1.5 day PD focuses on ensuring that each school have a critical mass of visible allies ensuring that each member of every school community is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. Each participant will engage in one full-day training in the fall, followed by a half-day training two-three months later to enhance their skills and knowledge base. GLSEN and OSSE will collaborate to provide additional follow-up supports, including webinar opportunities, as well as all necessary materials to participants free of charge.

Project Need: Based on national studies of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender) youth, safe schools foster a myriad of positive outcomes for youth and the schools that serve them, including:

  • Improved attendance
  • Higher educational aspirations
  • Greater academic achievement
  • Improved self-esteem
  • Less sexual risk taking

Package training dates*:
1.    Day 1 March 12 (full day) & Day 2 May 21 (half day) or
2.    Day 1 March 15 (full day) & Day 2 May 17 (half day)
*Participation in both days of the PD is required to receive Professional Learning Units (PLUs) from OSSE.
