Last Date:

National Archives, William G. McGowan Theater, Enter at the Special Events Entrance at Constitution Avenue and 7th Street, NW
Details:

Historian Dr. Jonathan Sarna, a leading expert on Jewish American history, presents his new book When General Grant Expelled the Jews.  As a Civil War general, Ulysses S. Grant expelled Jews from the area under his control in 1862. Grant later attended the 1876 dedication of the Adaas Israel Synagogue, today the Lillian & Albert Small Jewish Museum, making him the first sitting president to attend a synagogue service. Accompanied by best-selling author, accomplished journalist and political commentator Steven V. Roberts, Sarna sheds light on this notorious order and its ramifications for Grant's career, the American Jewish community, and the American political process. A book signing follows the program.
