Community Presentation at 4B ANC Meeting: Elementary and Secondary Education Act
In 2011, only 25 of 187 schools assessed under DC CAS made student proficiency targets in reading and math under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), commonly known as No Child Left Behind. Without the submission of a flexibility application to the US Department of Education, only 8 schools are projected to make annual proficiency targets in 2012. The District of Columbia has the opportunity to request flexibility in implementing certain ESEA requirements, both to more accurately rate schools and to outline a comprehensive plan for targeting rewards and support to schools based on their ratings. In January, the Office of the State Superintendent of Education will visit and host various community meetings to inform the public of what OSSE's application means for teachers, students, and parents.
