Serve DC is encouraging residents to volunteer on behalf of the DC Citizen Snow Team. The DC Citizen Snow Team is comprised of volunteers who are able to assist seniors and residents with disabilities with shoveling and snow removal in the event of winter weather.

We are hosting four (4) Snow Team Recruitment and Training Sessions for the 2015 - 2016 Snow Season where you will learn about the Citywide Snow Team (DDOT, DPW) snow removal deployments to clear main and side roads of snow and how volunteers can assist in these efforts by helping their elderly and disabled neighbors.  You will be provided with:
  • How Residents are selected by the Office on Aging/Disability to receive snow removal service
  • What parts of the property are to be shoveled
  • Snow versus Ice removal
  • Call Tree Operations Deployment
  • Equipment Distribution Information
  • Injury and Property Liability Information
  • And more...
Currently, there is a critical need for volunteers in Wards 4, 7 and 8.

The District requires property owners (residential and commercial) to clear the sidewalks surrounding their property within 24 hours after a snowfall or incur fines. Even a dusting of snow can pose a challenge for seniors or individuals with disabilities, which is why we are asking residents to volunteer their services to help keep everyone safe and make the winter a little easier on those in need.

Register online to become a DC Citizen Snow Team volunteer . For questions or further information, please email: [email protected] or call (202) 727-7925.

The DC Citizen Snow Team is part of the larger, citywide District Snow Team initiative. The District Snow Team is led by the Department of Public Works and the Department of Transportation in partnership with other government agencies. In the event of a snow emergency, the District of Columbia Snow Team clears snow and ice from approximately 2,295 lane miles of streets, bridges, overpasses and ramps across the city.

Training dates are:
  • September 22, 2015
  • October 14, 2015
